A general term for insects belonging to the Hemiptera family Cercopidae. In early summer, white bubbles can be seen on various plants, containing insects. These are the larvae of the cercopid bug. About 50 species are known in Japan. Adults resemble cicadas, but are small, about 5-18 mm in body length, with opaque, leathery wings. They are not very conspicuous, and often jump around plants. From summer to autumn, they lay long, thin eggs in groups of several in plant tissue or underground. These eggs do not hatch immediately, but survive the winter and hatch the following spring.

半翅目アワフキムシ科Cercopidaeに属する昆虫の総称。初夏のころに，いろいろな植物上で白色の泡が見られ，その中に虫がいる。これはアワフキムシの幼虫である。日本に約50種が知られる。成虫はセミに似るが，体長5～18mmくらいと小型で，不透明の革質化した翅をもつ。あまり目だたず，植物について，よく跳躍をする。夏から秋にかけて，植物の組織中や地中に数個ずつまとめて細長い卵を産む。この卵はすぐにかえらず，冬を越して翌年の春に孵化（ふか）する。
