This method came to be called by the above name because it resembles an individual putting daily necessities into a shopping basket at a market. The market basket method belongs to the category of theoretical cost of living methods that add up the amounts of daily necessities and services based on knowledge of life science, and a well-known example is the poverty line created by BS Rowntree.
