French painter. Born and died in Marseille. At the age of 22, he moved to Paris and entered the studio of Paul Delaroche. While studying the works of Rembrandt and the Venetian School at the Louvre, he became acquainted with Delacroix and Diaz de la Peña and was influenced by them. He gained popularity in Paris with his Rococo-style banquet paintings, but after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, he retreated to his hometown of Marseille. However, he later developed his own unique style, characterized by intense brushwork and dazzling colors. He came into contact with Cézanne in the south of France and had some influence on him, as well as on Van Gogh and others.
