Also called angiography. An examination method in which a contrast agent is injected into blood vessels and X-rays are taken. Arteriography is useful for diagnosing tumors, aneurysms, and vascular blockages, and is usually performed under fluoroscopy. Depending on the area, there are cerebral angiography, aortography, cardiac angiography, celiac artery angiography, renal arteriography, and limb arteriography. Since the development of selective angiography, in which a contrast agent is injected into only a localized artery using a catheter, the diagnostic rate has improved. Generally, a continuous imaging device is used, and a diagnosis is made from X-ray images in the arterial, capillary, and venous phases. It plays a major diagnostic role. An examination in which a contrast agent is injected into a vein is called venography.

血管造影ともいう。血管に造影剤を注入してX線撮影する検査法。動脈撮影は腫瘍，動脈瘤，血管の閉塞などの診断に有力で，普通は透視をしながら行う。部位により脳血管撮影，大動脈撮影，心血管撮影，腹腔動脈撮影，腎動脈撮影，四肢の動脈撮影などがある。カテーテルを用いて局所の動脈のみに造影剤を注入する選択的血管撮影が開発されて以来，診断率が向上した。一般に連続撮影装置が用いられ，動脈相，毛細管相，静脈相のX線写真から診断する。その診断的役割は大きい。静脈に造影剤を注入する検査は静脈撮影という。
