A branch of surgery that deals with the surgical treatment of vascular disorders. Since the 1950s, great strides have been made in the surgical treatment of arterial and venous diseases. Many of the surgical procedures performed today were previously unthinkable. As a result of advances in surgeon knowledge, improvements in surgical techniques, and advances in new surgical materials with the aid of industry, such as synthetic vascular substitutes and suture materials, vascular surgery has developed independently as a specialized field. However, it is extremely difficult to separate general surgery from vascular surgery. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
