Vascular surgery

Japanese: 血管外科 - けっかんげか（英語表記）vascular surgery

A branch of surgery that deals with the surgical treatment of vascular disorders. Since the 1950s, great strides have been made in the surgical treatment of arterial and venous diseases. Many of the surgical procedures performed today were previously unthinkable. As a result of advances in surgeon knowledge, improvements in surgical techniques, and advances in new surgical materials with the aid of industry, such as synthetic vascular substitutes and suture materials, vascular surgery has developed independently as a specialized field. However, it is extremely difficult to separate general surgery from vascular surgery.

血管病変の手術的治療を扱う外科の一分野。1950年代以降，動脈あるいは静脈の疾患に対する手術的治療は長足の進歩をとげた。今日行われている手術方法の多くは，以前にはほとんど考えられないものであった。外科医の知識の進歩，手術手技の改良，および合成代用血管や縫合材料のように工業の助けを借りた新しい手術材料の進歩の結果，血管外科は特殊領域として独自に開発されてきた。しかし，一般外科と血管外科を分離することはきわめて困難である。
