1562‐1626 A Chinese thinker from the late Ming Dynasty. His pen name was Cunzhi and his pen name was Jingyi. He was from Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. Along with Gu Xiancheng, he was one of the leaders of the Donglin Party. He tried to reform the corruption in politics at the end of the Ming Dynasty, but ultimately committed suicide by drowning. Living during a period of reflection on Yangmingism, he acknowledged the merits of its emphasis on human innate qualities, but criticized it for not taking into account human weakness. He himself embraced Neo-Confucianism, emphasizing "the focus on tranquility." In Japan, he was highly praised by Neo-Confucian scholars from the late Edo period and the Meiji Restoration. His writings include "Gaozi's Posthumous Writings" and "Gaozi's Unwritten Drafts." [Yoshida Kohei] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
