Lintun (English spelling)

Lintun (English spelling)
The name of a county established by Emperor Wu of Han in the former territory of Wiman Joseon in China. Emperor Wu established the so-called Four Han Commanderies in 108 B.C., and Lintun County is said to have been located roughly in the area from the southern part of Hamgyong Province to the Gangwon Province in Korea today. There are various theories as to where the commandery was located, and no consensus can be reached. During the reign of the next emperor, Emperor Zhao, various circumstances made it difficult to maintain the commandery, and the various commanderies were consolidated between the 80s and 70s B.C., with Lintun County being incorporated into Lelang County. Recently, historians of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea have identified the locations of the four commanderies, including Lintun County, as completely separate, and this is a topic for future research.
