A small kingdom of the Sotho (Basuto) people in what is now Lesotho, South Africa, in the 19th century. The Sotho people are said to have descended from Nguni-speaking people who migrated south across the Drakensberg Mountains in the 18th century. In the early 19th century, King Moshoeshoe I (c. 1785-1870) was attacked by King Shaka of the Zulus, and fled with his people to Thaba Bosiu (a flat-topped hill near Maseru), where he used skillful diplomatic tactics to ward off invasions by the Zulus and Matabele.
