Flood in Edo in the 2nd year of the Kanpo era

Japanese: 寛保2年江戸洪水 - かんぽうにねんえどこうずい

Rain had been falling continuously since July 28, 1742 (Kanpo 2), and on August 1, a heavy rainstorm hit, causing major flooding in both the Tone River and the Arakawa River systems. In Edo, the river rose between the night of the 3rd and the 7th, with over 3,900 people drowning in the Shitaya, Asakusa, and Honjo areas alone. The Shin-Ohashi and Eitai Bridges, as well as the pillars of the Ryogoku Bridge, which was under repair, were washed away. A report dated the 5th by the town magistrate Ishikawa Masatomo noted that the water in the Bell Tower in Shimizu-cho, Honjo, was 5-6 feet deep, with some houses flooded up to the eaves, and that the water in Yotsume in the same area was 5-6 to 7 feet deep. Just as the water level began to subside, another heavy rainstorm struck on the 8th, making the situation worse.
