1838‐84 A modern Indian religious reformer. He joined the Brahma Samaj (1857), which was founded by Ram Mohan Roy in 1828, and promoted a number of drastic reforms. He called for the total abolition of caste discrimination, and attempted to establish a major religious church worldwide that would incorporate Hinduism and Islam while also incorporating Christian ideas. He compiled a prayer book with quotations from religious scriptures around the world, abolished sati and permitted widow remarriage, opposed child marriage and polygamy, and founded various schools.
