Ashizuri Peninsula

Japanese:
Ashizuri Peninsula
A peninsula in the southwest of Kochi Prefecture, jutting out from the southwestern edge of Tosa Bay. The peninsula extends from Oki in Tosashimizu City south of Misaki, with Cape Ashizuri at its southernmost point. It is mountainous with little flat land, and the coast is lined with drowned valleys, coastal terraces, and sea cliffs, which tell of a history of repeated upheaval and subsidence. The southern part is made of granite, while the northern part is made of Paleogene rocks. Mt. Shirao (433m) in the south is the highest peak on the peninsula, and the surrounding area is part of the Ashizuri-Odo Natural Recreation Forest, and most of the peninsula is part of the Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park, creating a natural landscape of the sea and mountains unique to the southern region of Tosa. Tosashimizu Port is located in a drowned valley near the base of the peninsula, making it the center of the peninsula. There are many fishing villages on the coast. With the completion of the Ashizuri Skyline, which runs traverse the center of the peninsula, it has become easier to reach Cape Ashizuri, where the 38th temple of the 88 Shikoku Pilgrimage Temples, Kongofuku-ji Temple, and the lighthouse are located.
