A strait about 4 km wide between Akashi City in the southern part of Hyogo Prefecture and Awaji Island. In ancient times, it was called Akashi no To, and both banks were known as scenic spots with white sand and green pines. It is located at the western entrance of Osaka Bay, and is a center of land and water transportation with a lot of domestic and foreign ships coming and going. However, the sea off Matsuhoura on Awaji Island is a dangerous place with strong currents of 6 to 7 knots. The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge (completed in 1998), which is part of the Kobe-Naruto route of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge, spans between Maikohama in Kobe and Iwaya on Awaji Island. In the "Manyoshu," it is also written about as "Akashi no To" and "Akashi Ooto" by Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, Yamabe no Akahito, and others.
