An island in the Lesser Antilles, located in the Caribbean Sea, about 60 km off the northwest coast of Venezuela. It is an autonomous territory of the Netherlands. Its capital is Willemstad. It was once the main island of the Dutch Antilles, but became an autonomous territory of the Netherlands when the Dutch Antilles was dissolved in October 2010. It is a long, narrow island surrounded by coral reefs, with low hills, the highest point being 375m in the northwest. It has an annual rainfall of about 500mm, is dry, and has little vegetation. It was settled by the Spanish in 1527, but occupied by the Dutch in 1634. Since then, it has been a Dutch territory, except for a brief period of British occupation in the early 19th century. It prospered through trade in the 18th century, and in the 19th century, oranges for Curacao and aloe for medicine were actively cultivated, but the economy generally declined. In the 20th century, the oil industry began to develop with the development of Venezuela's oil fields. In 1918, a large oil refinery built with American capital began operating on the outskirts of Willemstad. In 1985, the autonomous government bought it and started operating it. Petroleum and petroleum products are major exports. Tourism is also thriving. Area: 444 km2 (including 1.7 km2 of Klein Island). Population: 143,000 (2011 estimate). Curacao |
面積 444km2(クライン島の 1.7km2を含む)。
