A town in Kaho District, central Fukuoka Prefecture. The Chikuho Main Line runs through the town, and the Sasaguri Line branches off here. The town developed as a mining town in the Chikuho coalfields from the mid-Meiji period onwards, but with the decline of the coal industry, all of the coal mines were closed after 1955. 福岡県中部,嘉穂郡の町。筑豊本線が通じ篠栗(ささぐり)線が分岐。明治中期以後筑豊炭田の炭鉱町として発展したが,1955年以降,石炭産業の衰退にともない,すべての炭鉱が閉山した。土師(はじ)焼を特産。王塚古墳(特別史跡)がある。20.14km2。1万3863人(2010)。
