In Greek legend, King of Mysia in Asia Minor. Son of Hercules. When the Greek army on a campaign against Troy landed in Mysia by mistake, Telephus was wounded by Achilles' spear while fighting back against them. He received an oracle at Delphi that said, "He who wounds shall also heal," so he visited Achilles and had his wound healed by the rust of Achilles' spear. In return, Telephus showed the Greek army the way to Troy. Euripides based this story on the tragedy Telephus (performed in 438 BC, no longer extant), but the comic poet Aristophanes greatly ridiculed it for its overly realistic lines.
