A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family (APG classification: Asteraceae). Native to North America, it is widely naturalized in Japan. The stem is erect and can reach 3 meters. The basal and lower leaves are stalked and pinnately divided into 5-7 lobes, while the upper leaves are sessile and divided into 3-5 lobes or not divided. The flowers are heads of ray and tubular flowers, with cone-shaped protruding flower beds. There are 10-15 ray flowers per head, yellow, 2-6 cm long, and recurve downwards. The tubular flowers are numerous and green-yellow. A variety in which most of the tubular flowers have become petals is called Hanagasagiku, also known as Yaezaki-oohangonsou, and is widely cultivated and naturalized.

キク科（APG分類：キク科）の多年草。北アメリカ原産で、日本では広く帰化している。茎は直立し、3メートルに達する。根出葉および下方の葉は有柄で、羽状に5～7裂し、上方の葉は無柄で、3～5裂するかまたは分裂しない。花は舌状花と筒状花とからなる頭花で、花床が円錐(えんすい)状に突出する。舌状花は1頭花につき10～15個で、黄色、長さ2～6センチメートル、下方に反り返る。筒状花は多数で、緑黄色。筒状花のほとんどが弁化した変種をハナガサギク、別名ヤエザキオオハンゴンソウといい、広く栽培され、帰化もしている。
