Armah, Ayi Kwei
Born in 1939. A novelist from Takoradi, British Gold Coast, Ghana. Written in English. After studying at the prestigious Achimota School, he worked as a scriptwriter, reporter, and announcer for the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation. At the age of 18, he moved to the United States and completed graduate studies at Harvard and Columbia universities. He has lived in various parts of Africa and has taught at many universities, including the University of Dar es Salaam, as well as at the University of Massachusetts and the University of Wisconsin in the United States. His most famous work is The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born (1968), which exposes the corruption of the black elite in Ghanaian society under the Nkrumah government after independence. His other works include Fragments (1970), which uses autobiographical elements to depict the chaos of post-independence society, Why Are We So Blest? (1972), Two Thousand Seasons (1973), which attempts to reconstruct Africa's past, and The Healers (1978), a historical novel that depicts the secret activities of reformers against the backdrop of the Second Ashanti War (→Ashanti) that took place in the late 19th century from 1873 to 1874, and questions the tragic history of the collapsed Ashanti Kingdom from the inside.
