A city in northern Israel. Facing the Mediterranean Sea, it has a port. It flourished as a Phoenician port from ancient times, and from the Middle Ages onwards was ruled by a succession of powers, including the Crusaders, the Ayyubid Dynasty and the Mamluk Dynasty. The old cityscape was developed into its present form during the late Ottoman Empire in the 18th and 19th centuries. There are tunnels and churches built by the Crusaders, as well as Islamic temples and caravanserais from the Ottoman period, and in 2001 it was registered as a World Heritage Site (cultural heritage) under the name "Old City of Acre".
