Armagh

Japanese: アーマー(英語表記)Armagh
Armagh
A city and district council area in the southern part of Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. The seat of the district's administrative office. In Irish, Ard Mhacha. Formerly part of County Armagh. County Armagh was one of the six Ulster counties that remained under British rule after the independence of Ireland. The town grew around a fortified hill, and in the 5th century, St. Patrick established a church as its base of operations. In the 16th century, it was settled by English (Protestants), and many educational institutions were subsequently established, including the Royal School (1627), a library, and an observatory (1765). Armagh is the seat of both the Archbishopric of the Church of Ireland (Anglican Church) and the Catholic Archbishopric. It is a commercial centre, with textile, chemical, optical, and food processing industries. The district of Armagh was created in 1973 by the reorganization of local authorities, and is bordered by Dungannon and South Tyrone to the northwest, Craigavon to the northeast, Banbridge to the east, Newry Mourne to the southeast, and Ireland to the southwest. Located south of Lough Neagh, the area is made up of lowlands in the north and hills and mountains in the south. The northern lowlands are fertile agricultural areas, with fruit cultivation thriving. Light industry is carried out here, but the linen industry, which was once the area's main industry, has declined due to the development of synthetic fibers. The southern part of the area bordering Ireland became a hotbed of conflict between Catholic and Protestant residents in the second half of the 20th century. Area: 676 km2 . Area population: 54,876 (2004 estimate). Urban population: 14,590 (2001).
