Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A monk from the Nara period. Also called "Keishun." He died during the Enryaku era (782-806). He was born into the Kuzui (Fujii) clan, a clan of immigrants from Tanbi District, Kawachi Province (near Fujiidera City, Osaka Prefecture). The Kuzui clan, along with the Funa clan and Tsu clan, are clans related to the Saibun clan and live in the southern part of Kawachi, and have traditionally had deep ties to Buddhism. It is also close to the main residence of Empress Komyo's mother, Inukai Tachibana Michiyo, in Furuichi District, Kawachi Province. After becoming a monk, Keishun belonged to Daian-ji Temple, where he studied Miwa, Hosso, Kegon, and other theories under the teacher Doji, a monk who had traveled to China. After serving as a Kegon lecturer, in 753 he became the head priest of Hokke-ji Temple (which originated as a palace temple that was established as the palace of Empress Komyo). In the same year, at the time of the death of Emperor Shomu, he was praised as "a leader of the Xuantong who endured the protection of the sacred era" and appointed as a monk. The background to this promotion is assumed to be his strong ties with Empress Komyo and Fujiwara no Nakamaro, in addition to his academic education. Keishun lost his position with the collapse of the Nakamaro government, and returned to the position of monk after Dokyo's downfall. <References> Ryu Sakuma, "Research on the Biographies of Ancient Japanese Monks" (Hiroyuki Sagimori) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
