Psychotherapy through artistic activities. Also called art therapy. Artistic activities such as drawing pictures, composing poems, haiku, tanka, taking photos, singing, playing musical instruments, and acting are all incorporated into treatment. These are sometimes called music therapy, dance therapy, and photo therapy. Through these activities, patients can open up their minds, which tend to be withdrawn, improve their imagination and vitality, and regain their courage, hope, and joy in life. Since the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, it has become a hot topic as an effective treatment for the care and social rehabilitation of elderly people and disaster victims. In addition, speech therapy using pictures, in which patients with speech disorders are asked to communicate their intentions by drawing pictures instead of words, is also expected to be effective. In the United States, photo therapy and dance therapy in particular are actively used, but their mechanisms are not yet clear, and they have not yet been established as treatments in Japan. → Ikigai Therapy

芸術活動を通して行う精神療法。アートセラピーarttherapyともいう。絵をかく，詩や俳句，短歌をつくる，写真を撮る，歌を歌う，楽器を演奏する，演劇をするなど，芸術的なあらゆる活動が治療に導入される。それぞれ，音楽療法（ミュージック・セラピー），舞踏療法（ダンス・セラピー），写真療法（フォト・セラピー）などと個別に呼ばれることもある。活動を通して，内にこもりがちな心を開放し，想像力や生命力を高め，生きる勇気や望み，楽しみを回復する。高齢者や災害の被災者のケアと社会復帰に有効な治療法として，阪神・淡路大震災以降，話題となっている。　また，言語障害を発症した患者に絵を描かせて〈言葉〉のかわりをさせることで意思伝達を行う，絵画を利用した言語療法も，その効果が期待されている。米国では，特に写真療法や舞踏療法が積極的に行われているが，そのメカニズムは未解明で，日本ではまだ治療法として確立されていない。→生きがい療法
