...The conflict between the north and south, represented by the two powerful tribes, the Mende and the Temne, has had a serious impact on the domestic politics of Sierra Leone. The first general election in 1951 elected a prime minister from the south, but in 1968 Siaka Stevens (1905-1988), leader of the All People's Congress (APC), which represented the interests of the north, became prime minister with the support of the Creole community and later became president.
