Apollonios of Perga (English spelling)

Japanese: アポロニオス[ペルゲの]（英語表記）Apollōnios

He was born in the second half of the 3rd century BC and died in the early 2nd century BC. He was born in Perga, a small city in Asia Minor, and was called the "great geometer." Apollonius' name is linked above all to the eight books of "De Conic Sections." The conic sections before Apollonius were integrated into this general work, and it is even said that they were not passed down to later generations. The first four books are known in the original Greek, and books five to seven were passed down through Arabic by Sabit bin Qurra, but the last book has been mostly lost.

前3世紀の後半に生まれ，前2世紀初め没。小アジアの小都市ペルゲPergēに生まれ，〈偉大な幾何学者〉と呼ばれた。アポロニオスの名は何よりも《円錐曲線論》8巻と結びついている。アポロニオス以前の円錐曲線論は一般的なこの著作に統合され，そのため後世に伝わらなかったとさえいわれる。初めの4巻はギリシア語原文で知られ，第5～7巻はサービト･ブン･クッラによるアラビア語を介して伝わったが，最後の巻はおおかたが失われた。
