It is said that the first person to teach baseball in Japan was Wilson H. Wilson (aged 28 at the time), who came from the United States to teach at Minami School (later the University of Tokyo) in Kanda, Tokyo, in 1871 (Meiji 4). In 1873, A. Bates coached students in a game at the Kaitakushi Provisional School in Shiba.
