A village in Minamitsuru County, at the southern tip of Yamanashi Prefecture. Population 2,784 (1995). Located at the northern foot of Mt. Fuji. To the north of the village is Mt. Ashiwada, where the Tokai Nature Trail passes, and to the west is the Aokigahara Sea of Trees. Located in an area of lava flows from Mt. Fuji, the village is not very productive, and forestry has been the main industry, as has sericulture and miscellaneous grain cultivation, but in recent years the production of highland vegetables, mainly cabbage and radishes, has become popular. Since the Fuji Subaru Line was opened in 1964, golf courses and villa areas have been developed in the vast highland area, and it has become a tourist center for the Fuji Five Lakes area.
