A Greek scholar and poet of the 3rd century BC. Dates of birth and death unknown. Author of the four books of the heroic epic poem "Argonautica". He also wrote other academic works and short poems. His birthplace is said to be either Alexandria or Naucratis. He became head of the Alexandrian Library around 260 BC, and retired to the island of Rhodes around 247 BC. For this reason, he is called "Rhodios." His fierce literary debate with his teacher Callimachus over the merits of long and short poems is said to be a famous incident of the time. "Argonautica" was written despite the trend of the time to dislike long poems. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
