An instrument for measuring the direction and speed of ocean currents. Traditionally, observations were made from ships using mechanical current meters that use water currents to rotate a propeller, invented by Sweden's G. Ekman in 1926. In the 1960s, various countries developed models that record current direction, speed, water temperature, and other data as a function of time. These, along with recorders and power sources, are housed in pressure-resistant containers and moored in the deep sea using pressure-resistant buoyancy materials and anchors, allowing for long-term continuous observations. Measurement data is sent by radio from a buoy placed on the surface, or recorded in underwater equipment, which is then retrieved by releasing the anchor and bringing it to the surface.

海流の流向･流速を測定する測器。従来スウェーデンのエクマンG.Ekmanが1926年に考案した水流によりプロペラを回転させる機械式の流速計などを使用して船上から観測が行われてきた。60年代に流向･流速･水温などを時間の関数として記録する機種が各国で開発され，これと記録計，電源などを耐圧容器に収め耐圧浮力材と錨を用いて深海に係留し，長期間連続観測が行えるようになった。測定データは水上にブイをおきそこから無線で送るか，水中の機器に記録し，錨を切り離して浮上させて回収する。
