A common name for the Young Women's Christian Association. A women's organization made up of mostly young women from around the world, based on Christian faith, with the goal of improving the personalities of its members, raising the spirit of service, and building the ideal Christian society. It began in 1855 when Emma Roberts organized the Prayer Union in London. Mary Jane Kinnaird (1816-1888), who served in the Crimean War, established a nursing home and called it the YWCA. These organizations merged in 1877, and in 1894 the YWCAs of each country joined to form the World YWCA Alliance. Initially, the headquarters was in London, but in 1930 it moved to Geneva. The Japan YWCA was founded in 1905 (Meiji 38) and joined the World YWCA Alliance the following year. It has been deepening fellowship among its members while promoting activities for world peace, women's human rights, and Japan's role in Asia. As of 2000 (Heisei 12), it has approximately 7,000 members. There are 26 city YWCAs, and 33 junior and senior high school YWCA organizations nationwide. There is also the YMCA, a men's Christian organization with the same purpose.
