Chatellenie

...As a result, the classical manorial system collapsed, the lords lost their feudal power and became mere landowners, and political power (judicial power) was concentrated in the hands of a few lords. The chatellenie, which appeared in 11th-century France, is a typical example of this judicial power. On the other hand, the cities felt that it was in their interest to be able to conduct free and safe commercial transactions over as wide an area as possible, and they supported the king and tried to break down the feudal separation of powers.
