Gundulić, Ivan

Gundulić, Ivan
Born: January 8, 1589, Dubrovnik
Died: December 8, 1638. Dubrovnik Croatian poet. A medieval dramatic poet who flourished in the Adriatic port of Dubrovnik, he is a representative of Dubrovnik literature, a local literature that flourished under the influence of Italian Renaissance literature. He translated many works by L. Ariosto and T. Tasso, but most of these have been lost and only the titles remain. Baroque influences can be seen in works such as Suze sina razmetnoga (Tears of the Prodigal Son) (1622), a moral poem based on the Bible, and Dubravka (1628), a pastoral play. His most famous work is the unfinished epic poem Osman, about the Ottoman emperor who plotted to conquer Europe but was defeated by the Polish army.
