Guntur (English spelling)
A city in central-eastern Andhra Pradesh, southeastern India. It is the administrative capital of Guntur district. It is located on the alluvial plain of the Krishna River, about 32 km southwest of Vijayawada. It was built by the French, who advanced into the area in the 18th century, and developed as a commercial center. It was occupied by the British in 1788, and formally ceded to them in 1823. In addition to distributing jute, tobacco, rice, etc., the city is also home to thriving agricultural product processing industries, including cotton manufacturing, tobacco manufacturing, rice milling, and oil extraction. Population: 471,020 (1991).
