The capital of the province of the same name in northern Afghanistan. Population 108,000 (1988). Formerly a forested marshland, Kunduz was the site of a proverb that said, "If you want to die, go to Kunduz." However, it developed after a cotton mill was established in 1935. The cotton mill also has cottonseed oil, pottery, and hotel divisions, and is one of the country's largest companies. Together with Baghlan and Puli Khumri to the south, it forms an industrial zone. Its importance is also due to its location, only 60 km from the border with Tajikistan. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
