Kunduz (English spelling)

Japanese: クンドゥーズ（英語表記）Kundūz

The capital of the province of the same name in northern Afghanistan. Population 108,000 (1988). Formerly a forested marshland, Kunduz was the site of a proverb that said, "If you want to die, go to Kunduz." However, it developed after a cotton mill was established in 1935. The cotton mill also has cottonseed oil, pottery, and hotel divisions, and is one of the country's largest companies. Together with Baghlan and Puli Khumri to the south, it forms an industrial zone. Its importance is also due to its location, only 60 km from the border with Tajikistan.

アフガニスタン北部，同名州の州都。人口10万8000(1988)。以前は森林におおわれた湿地帯で，〈死にたければクンドゥーズへ行け〉という諺（ことわざ）があったが，1935年に製綿会社が設立されてから発展した。製綿会社は綿実油，陶器，ホテルの部門ももち，この国有数の大企業である。南につらなるバグラーン，プリ･フムリーとともに工業地帯を構成している。タジキスタンとの国境までわずか60kmという位置からも，重要性は大きい。
