A state in the southeast of Australia. The Australian Alps run along the south coast, and the northwest is a lowland area in the Murray River basin. Except inland, the climate is favorable, and wheat, grapes, and other crops are cultivated, and livestock such as sheep and cattle are thriving. The state produces gold and coal. The first settlers were in Melbourne in 1835, and the number of settlers increased rapidly after the discovery of gold mines in the Ballarat area in the mid-19th century. The state capital is Melbourne. 227,416 ^km2 . Population 5,354,042 (2011).
