Gigakujishi - Gigakujishi

Japanese: 伎楽獅子 - ぎがくじし
Gigakujishi - Gigakujishi

[Two people standing]
The two standing lions, one for the head and front legs and the other for the tail and hind legs, make up a single lion. It is thought to have been introduced to Japan via the Korean Peninsula as part of gigaku at least by the time of the reign of Empress Suiko in the early 7th century, and is also called gigakushishi. Lion dancing was also performed in bugaku, which was introduced to Japan 50 years later than gigaku, and it gave birth to various lion performances in the classical arts ("lion").
