Plants and animals are steamed and baked in earthenware jars while still retaining their original shape until they are blackened. This was a folk remedy introduced from mainland China, and blackened food shops flourished in Edo and Osaka around the time of the Genroku and Kyoho eras. Mamushi snakes were said to be a miracle cure for venereal diseases, and newts for marital harmony, but the medicinal properties of many of these are unclear. There is a humorous story in "Chikusai" about how blackened old tatami mats and old paper were used to cure malaria. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
