One of the principalities of medieval Russia. It originated from the homeland of the East Slavic Krivichi tribe (particularly the Smolensk Krivichi), who conquered and intermingled with the native Baltic peoples and spread to the upper reaches of the Western Dvina, Dnieper, and Volga rivers. At the end of the 9th century, during the early days of the Kievan Rus state, the central city of Smolensk was already there, but it was not until the reign of the first prince, Rostislav (reigned 1127-59), grandson of Vladimir Monomakh. Later, as the Kievan Rus state became increasingly divided into feudal domains, the two sub-principalities of Mozhaisk and Byazemsky were separated from the Smolensk principality in the second half of the 13th century.
