Hakone Shrine

Japanese:
Hakone Shrine

Located in Motohakone, Hakone-machi, Ashigarashimo-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture. Formerly a small national shrine. Formerly called Hakone Gongen. It enshrines the three gods of Hakone (Ninigi-no-Mikoto, Konohanasakuya-hime-no-Mikoto, and Hikohohodemi-no-Mikoto). According to the "Hakone-san Engi and Jo," it began when the hermit Shosen founded a Shinsen-gu shrine on Mount Komagatake during the reign of Emperor Kōshō, and Rigyo-no-Jō built a hall, and Takeuchi-no-Sukune enshrined Koma-okami. Originally called Hannya-ji Temple, it was renamed Tofuku-ji Temple during the reign of Genri. In 757 (Tenpyo-hoji 1), Mangan Shonin built a shrine and enshrined the two gods Komagata and Nozen. Since the Kamakura period, it has flourished as the guardian deity of the samurai. The Kamakura Shogunate made pilgrimages to this shrine and Sotozan Gongen (Izusan Shrine) an annual event, calling it Nishomode. The Hojo clan also provided strong patronage, and the Edo Shogunate also followed suit by repairing the shrine buildings. In 1868 (Meiji 1), the separation of Shinto and Buddhism led to the name change to Hakone Shrine. The shrine's collection includes the Hakone Gongen Engi Emaki (Hakone Gongen Engi Emaki), a seated statue of Mangan Shonin, and more. The annual festival is held on August 1st.
