Asian water buffalo

…the English name for the animals of the Bovidae family, especially the water buffalo. It is used for the Asian water buffalo and the African buffalo, but is also a colloquial name for the American bison. The French settlers in Canada called the bison le bœuf (meaning cow), which changed into buffle, buffelo, and finally buffalo.
