…He was a Swabian knight (squire). His works, Lamentations and Erek, were begun around 1180 and completed around 1190, while Gregory and Poor Henry were written in that order between 1190 and 1197. During this period he wrote lyric poems in which he broke with the secular world and love (Minne), as well as songs of the crusades that were the product of his participation in the crusades (1189-91). …
