Hakusanro - Hakusanro

The name of a Chinese incense burner. It has a sea-shaped saucer with a protruding mountain-shaped lid, and was first used in the Han dynasty and was widely used from the Six Dynasties to the Tang dynasty. It is available in ceramic, jade, and metal, and when incense is burned using this burner, the smoke rises from the holes carved into the mountain-shaped lid in various places, just like clouds clinging to the mountain peaks. The custom of burning incense became popular with the arrival of this unique vessel, and it became an indispensable tool for Buddhist incense offerings. Boshan incense burners can be seen everywhere in the decoration of the pedestals of Buddhist statues. There are various theories about the origin of the name, including that it means a mountain towering in the sea, or that it is based on the name of a mountain in Shandong Province, and there is no consensus.

中国の香炉の名。海をかたどった受け皿の上から突出した山岳形の蓋(ふた)をもつ香炉で、漢代に始まり、六朝(りくちょう)から唐代まで盛んに用いられた。陶製、玉製、金属製などがあり、この香炉を用いて香を薫ずれば、煙は蓋の山岳の諸所にうがたれた穴から、あたかも雲が山の峰にまつわりつくごとく立ち上る趣向である。薫香の風習はこの独特の器を得て流行し、仏教の香華(こうげ)供養のための不可欠の器具となった。仏像の台座の装飾の至る所に博山香炉をみることができる。名称の由来については、海中にそびえる山岳の意、あるいは山東省の山名によるなど諸説あり、一定しない。
