(1) The page just before the main text of a scroll is decorated with pictures and patterns. An early example is the Bonmo-kyo Sutra, a treasure of the Shoso-in Repository, which has landscapes painted on it, and the endpapers of the Heike-nokyo Sutra are famous for their splendor. (2) Paper used to connect the cover and contents of a book in a Western-style binding. （１）巻子本(かんすぼん)の本文が始まるすぐ前の紙面で，装飾として絵画や文様が描かれた。正倉院宝物の《梵網(ぼんもう)経》に山水が描かれているのが早い例で，平家納経の見返しは豪華さで有名。（２）洋装本で本の表紙と中身とをつなぎ合わせている紙。二つ折りにした丈夫な紙を本文ののどの部分にのりづけしたはり見返しが普通に行われている。→製本
