Mount Kuroso

Japanese: 俱留尊山 - くろそやま

It is also called "Kurusoyama". It is on the border between Misugi Village, Ichishi District, Mie Prefecture and Muro Village, Uda District, Nara Prefecture. It is the main peak of the Tertiary Muro volcanic group, with an elevation of 1,038m. Muro volcanic rocks are mainly rhyolite welded tuff, are over 400m thick, and extend 28km east to west and 15km north to south. There is a good view from the summit, and the Kurumason stone Buddha is located on a steep cliff on the eastern slope near the summit. The depression called Ikenodaira on the middle slope was developed as farmland after World War II, and there is also a campsite. The Shorenji River, which flows on the west side of the mountain, has deeply eroded the welded tuff, creating the Kochidani gorge with its beautiful outcrops of columnar joints, and the surrounding area has been designated as Muro Akame Aoyama Quasi-National Park.

〈くるそやま〉ともいう。三重県一志郡美杉村と奈良県宇陀郡室生村の境にある山。第三紀の室生火山群の主峰で，標高1038m。室生火山岩は流紋岩質の溶結凝灰岩を主とし，厚さ400m以上，東西28km，南北15kmにひろがる。山頂からの眺望がよく，山頂付近の東斜面の急崖には俱留尊石仏がある。中腹の池の平と呼ぶくぼ地は，第2次大戦後の開拓地で畑地となり，キャンプ場もある。山の西側を流れる青蓮寺川は溶結凝灰岩を深く浸食し，柱状節理の露頭が見事な香落渓（こおちだに）の峡谷をつくり，周辺は室生赤目青山国定公園に指定されている。
