A marine fish of the Sparidae family in the order Perciformes (illustration). It is found throughout Japan, the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, and the East China Sea. In the Kansai region, it is called chinu, while in the Kanto region, fish under one year old are called chinchin, those two years old are called kaizu, and those three years old or older are called kurodai. It can grow to over 50 cm in length. Its body color is dark gray with a silvery white abdomen, but juveniles have several black horizontal stripes. It lives on sandy, muddy coastal bottoms, and uses its well-developed molars on both jaws to feed on hard foods such as shellfish, crabs, barnacles, and brittle stars. スズキ目タイ科の海産魚(イラスト)。日本各地,朝鮮半島南部,東シナ海に分布している。関西ではチヌ,関東では1歳未満をチンチン,2歳をカイズ,3歳以上をクロダイと呼ぶ。全長50cmを超える。体色は暗灰色で腹部は銀白色であるが,幼魚では数本の黒色横帯がある。沿岸の砂泥底にすみ,両あごの発達した臼歯(きゆうし)により,貝類,カニ類,フジツボ,クモヒトデなどの硬いものをよく食べる。また,ゴカイ類や海藻類などなんでも食べる雑食性の魚である。
