Talev, D.

[Literature after World War II]
On September 9, 1944, in response to the Red Army's invasion of Bulgaria, the Fatherland Front, with the Communist Party at its core, seized power. After the political situation settled down, the Soviet Union's "socialist realism" became the gold standard in Bulgarian literature, and many standardized and schematic works were written, but there were also masterpieces such as Stanev's "The Peach Thief," Dimov's "Cigarettes," and Dimitâr Talev's (1898-1966) historical novel "The Iron Lighthouse" (1952). Following the criticism of the "cult of personality" in the Soviet Union in February 1956, a plenary session of the Central Committee of the Communist Party was held in Bulgaria in April of the same year, where the narrow-minded understanding of "socialist realism" up to that point was reconsidered, new genres such as science fiction, detective novels, and spy novels were developed, and forms of expression became more diverse.
