...This Mexican short-culm wheat, famous for having one parent of the Japanese wheat, Norin 10, was developed at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), which was established in Mexico in 1963 with the support of the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations, and quickly spread to Mexico, India, Pakistan, and other countries. Also, with the support of the two foundations, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) was established in 1962 on government-provided land in Los Baños, near Manila, Philippines, and brought together outstanding scientists from all over the world. In 1965, they announced a new high-yielding short-culm rice variety, IR-8, which was called the miracle rice, and the following year, IR-5. These new varieties had extremely superior characteristics compared to the existing native varieties. ...
