A city in central Okinawa Island, Okinawa Prefecture. Koza City and Misato Village, which were incorporated as cities in 1957, merged and changed their name in 1974. Goeku Castle was built here during the Ryukyu Kingdom. Before World War II, it was a farming village, but after the US military was stationed there after the war, it urbanized rapidly. It is the second largest city in the prefecture after Naha City, but nearly 40% of its total area is used for US military land, and it is highly dependent on the base economy and has a strong consumer city character.
