Born: May 6, 1859 in Amsterdam
[died] March 31, 1938. The Hague. Dutch poet and critic. In the 1880s, when the trend towards individualism that swept across Europe awakened the Dutch literary world, he was at the forefront of young poets. He founded the group "Writers of the 1880s" (1882), proclaimed "individual expression of individual feelings," and founded the journal De Nieuwe Gids (1885-1943). He served as editor-in-chief until his death and played a leading role as a critic. Many of his poems were in sonnet form, and Het Boek van Kind en God (1888) is his most famous. Other works include Sappho (1881) and Okeanos (1882-1984).

オランダの詩人，批評家。ヨーロッパを風靡した個人主義的思潮がオランダの文壇を覚醒させた 1880年代，若い詩人たちの先頭に立って活躍。「1880年代の作家たち」という団体をつくり (1882) ，「個性的な感情の個性的表現」を宣言，機関誌『新案内』 De Nieuwe Gids (85～1943) を創刊，死ぬまで編集長をつとめ，批評家としても指導的な役割を果した。彼の詩はソネット形式のものが多く，『子供と神の本』 Het Boek van Kind en God (1888) は最も有名。そのほか『サッフォー』 Sappho (81) ，『オケアノス』 Okeanos (82～84) などがある。
