A strait between the Danish peninsula of Jutland and the coast of southern Norway. It is about 120-145 km wide and 240 km long. It separates the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The Danish side is shallow (less than 100 m deep) and consists of sand dunes, while the Norwegian side is deep (about 800 m deep at its deepest point) and resembles the bottom of a ship. The climate along the coast is relatively mild due to the influence of the Norwegian Current. Many Vikings passed through here in the 8th to 11th centuries. The main ports in the area are Oslo, Kristiansand (both in Norway), Strömstad, and Uddevalla (all in Sweden).
