Born March 28, 1903 in Eger, Austria-Hungary (now Cheb, Czech Republic)
[Died] May 8, 1991. Guilford, Vermont, USA. American pianist and piano teacher, born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He performed mainly German music, such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven. He studied under pianist Richard Robert and composers Joseph Marx and Arnold Schoenberg, and made his debut at the age of 12 with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. In the 1920s, he became famous for his virtuoso performances with violinist Adolf Busch. In 1926, he moved to Basel, Switzerland. He gave his first US performance in 1933, and moved to the US in 1939. Known for his faithfulness to the original scores and clear interpretations, he taught piano at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia from 1939 to 1975, and contributed to the founding of the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont in 1949. His son Peter also became a successful concert pianist.

オーストリア=ハンガリー帝国生まれのアメリカ合衆国のピアニスト,ピアノ教師。ヨハン・ゼバスチアン・バッハ,ウォルフガング・アマデウス・モーツァルト,ルートウィヒ・ファン・ベートーベンなどのドイツ音楽を中心に演奏活動を行なった。ピアニストのリヒアルト・ロベルト,作曲家のヨーゼフ・マルクス,アルノルト・シェーンベルクに師事し,12歳でウィーン交響楽団との協演でデビュー。1920年代にはバイオリニストのアドルフ・ブッシュと組んだ名演奏で有名になった。1926年スイスのバーゼルに移住。1933年に初めてアメリカ公演を行ない,1939年に生活や活動の場をアメリカに移した。原譜への忠実さと明快な解釈を特徴とし,1939年から1975年までフィラデルフィアのカーティス音楽院でピアノを教え,1949年にはバーモント州のマールボロ音楽祭の設立に貢献した。息子ピーターもコンサートピアニストとして成功した。
