Movie art - eiga bijutsu

Japanese: 映画美術 - えいがびじゅつ

A general term for all art involved in film production (including not only sets and decorations but also props, costumes, etc.). There are two concepts of film art: one in which the art director is involved in determining the scale and commercial value of the work based on the producer's perspective, and one in which the art director helps realize the director's directorial intentions and designs a unique cinematic space. WC Menzies, who contributed to the unification of the visual style of Gone with the Wind (1939), was an example of the former, and made people realize the importance of the position of the art director in Hollywood's ``producer system.''

映画製作に関与する美術のすべて(セット，装飾のみならず小道具，衣装なども含む)に対する総称。プロデューサーの視点に即して作品の規模や商品価値の決定にまで関与する場合と，監督の演出意図の実現を助けて独自の映画的空間を設計する場合という二つの映画美術の概念が存在する。《風と共に去りぬ》(1939)の画調の統一に貢献したW.C.メンジーズは前者にあたり，ハリウッドの〈プロデューサー･システム〉における美術監督の地位の重要さを認識させた。
